He directs his squad to return to defend the fleet and hold them off, and against incredible odds manages to do so and save many Earth lives. _Grandfather_ (name idea: Elijah) is a old veteran and once hero of the war between Mars and Earth. He is the grandfather of Jack. After the war, he was permitted to keep two flight simulators because of his status as a war hero. He allows Jack to use it for fun and to practice his skills as a racer. Secretly, he reenacts the battles of the war, lingering on his failures to prevent the deaths of his friends and the extreme devastation of the war.
Though he allows Jack to use the simulators, he encourages him to focus on his studies and on socializing with his young peers. He does not believe that combat, even simulated, is good for Jack's mental health, and that it is not conducive to the mindset necessary for building a lasting peace.
