_Grandfather_ fought for Earth in the war between Earth and Mars.

[Refinement of idea needed] In the final battle, his efforts saved many lives from destruction. The mission involved his squad taking out a key element of Martian infrastructure (space port, etc.), but while heading there Martian fighters take the Earth fleet by surprise. He directs his squad to return to defend the fleet and hold them off, and against incredible odds manages to do so and save many Earth lives. However, Earth High Command decides to call off the tactical war and simply bombard Mars' surface, causing great destruction. _Grandfather_ is recognized as a war hero for his efforts, but regrets not accomplishing the mission, which could have turned the war in his favor, saved his friends lives (who die in the defense of the fleet), and prevented the destruction of Mars.
